In association with Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe, 2nd Year undergraduates from the BA Fine Art course at the Arts University Bournemouth will present their outcomes and findings from a two-week symposium held at AUB in October 2015 under the theme ‘Cultures of Nature’.
When we have experiences of nature to what extent are our perceptions of it conditioned and shaped by the particular culture that we come from? One of the most important insights of postmodern cultural theory is the recognition that wherever we point to something that we call “nature” or “natural”, what we tend to encounter is a mirror of ourselves, and that it is an unavoidable human habit to “anthropomorphize” nature and to see it in our own image. The exhibition “Cultures of Nature” will address questions about our contemporary relationship to nature in its multi faceted and complex form, and by revealing the term as culturally determined, will examine its political, ideological, and historical dimensions and significances.
