“This is an uplifting film for anyone who is still in love with punk rock. My take away was that punk can still be a force for change rather than a throwback soundtrack.” Louder than war

Released in 2022, against the backdrop of a return to military dictatorship in Myanmar (also known as Burma) following a deadly coup and historic protests to resist it in the spring of 2021. No Spicy No Fun: Rebel Riot in the UK shows a Yangon group of activist punks formed under the military dictatorship, full of hope, experiencing new things in new lands and sharing ideas on social change that they wanted to take back home, ready to face the future together.

Since then, things have become unimaginably hard for the band and the people of Myanmar as they continue their resistance. When General Min Aung Hlaing took power in February 2021 there were spontaneous protests all over Myanmar opposing the military coup. People from all walks of life took part in these passionate and often creative protests and following that the military began a brutal crackdown since killing thousands of people. More recently In July 2022 Myanmar’s military junta executed four men, including a veteran democracy activist and a rapper-turned-politician in the country’s first death sentences carried out in over 30 years.

Money raised at this event will go towards Rebel Riot’s Food Not Bombs campaign and to other good causes in Myanmar. We will also have a donation pot if you would like to contribute further.

With online talk with special guest MiMi Aye, Burmese Chef and activist.

Language: Predominately English with some Burmese (English subtitles)
