IT’S ALL ABOUT CULTURE, CONNECTED EXHIBITION

Saulė Dominaitė: Liberty – the freedom to live as you wish or go where you want.’

Liberty is a word whose meaning can hold entire countries at hostage; one word whose heaviness provoked half a dozen generations to leave.

Starting my 20s in a pandemic, my generation felt robbed – robbed of our youth, our money and our freedom. But freedom was something my generation never knew, we’d never lost it, and we had no desperate need to get it back.

In a post-Soviet Lithuania, my parents knew what freedom felt like because that freedom stemmed from the previous existence of suppression. Foreign music – banned. Restaurants – unaffordable. Rave culture even in the now idolised wild 90s – non-existent.

So for that same word of “suppression” to be casually thrown around during times when we are free to think, feel, want, buy, listen, dance and learn, just with the added caution of a deadly virus surrounding us – felt misleading. This exhibition is meant to explore these widely different concepts of freedom and suppression between mine and my parents’ early 20s, and how their experience is teaching me to never take my liberty for granted.
