SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION : WOMEN OF WORDS - Exhibition and Online Film Performance
DESCRIPTION:What narratives are told when women are the storytellers? \nIn this pre-recorded online performance and accompanying exhibition\, Valise Noire Storytelling Theatre will share new writing created by local women who have experienced male violence against women. These Women of Words speak  to female narratives from Dorset’s past and present.   \nThe group’s evocative writing amplifies unique voices\, such as Bournemouth’s Lady Annie Russell-Cotes\, a well-travelled philanthropist\, to the silenced voices of patients at the local asylum\, Herrison Hospital. The project explores sound and  silence\, privilege\, pain and pleasure across time\, creating new narratives that  women want to tell.   \nThe film is available to watch below (16+) and the public exhibition will be on display in the windows of Boscombe Library\, both during the course of the festival. The exhibition has been created in collaboration with local illustrator Corrianna Clarke.   \nValise Noire Storytelling Theatre is Michele O’Brien and Alice Flynn. ‘Women of Words\, Dorset’ has been made possible by the National Lottery  Heritage Fund\, funded by National Lottery players. It has been created in partnership with BEAF\, charitable housing association BCHA\, the Dorset History Centre and The Russell-Cotes Museum.  \n [Photo Credit: Richard Budd (c) 2021] \n \nRelated Event \nChurchill Gardens Family Friendly Performance – Sunday 4th July @2-4pm \n \nCOVID-19 AND GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES \nWe will be following Government guidelines for all events to make sure we provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.  \nKeep up to date on our website as events may have to change or be cancelled should any new restrictions come into play on the day.  \nWe will email ticket holders of any changes to events. \nKeeping you safe \nOur policy is to: \n\nGive you a warm welcome at a safe distance \nUse signage to help you maintain social distance \nProvide hand sanitiser for you to use \nReduce capacity if required \nAsk you to limit social interactions before\, during and after the event \nEncourage audience members aged 11+ to wear a face covering

SUMMARY:BEAF TAKEOVER ROYAL ARCADE : AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO REALITY
DESCRIPTION:ROYAL ARCADE : UNIT 11 \nAN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO REALITY \n‘An appropriate response to reality’ is an exhibition curated by Aaron Peever and Callum Stacey. The exhibition will showcase works by Alice Cunniffe\, Jack Earls\, Aaron Peever\, and Callum Stacey. This exhibition responds to this year’s BEAF theme 2B Human through artworks made in restricted spaces from over the past year. Being a creative in restricted times has pushed each artist to work in limited spaces\, only being stimulated by the small worlds that surround us.  \nOur work is a reaction to the disruption of our reality. This year’s BEAF theme gave us a focus where we want to support mental health and we would like to ask each viewer to make a small donation to our chosen charity\, Dorset Mind and we encourage viewers to bring a food bank donation\, to be collected at the space.  \nArtists \nAaron Peever \nInstagram @peevers_artwork \nWebsite \nCallum Stacey \nInstagram @callum.s.designs \nWebsite \nAlice Cunniffe \nInstagram @alice.cunniffe \nJack Earls \nInstagram @jackearls.art

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN : STUART SEMPLE
DESCRIPTION:Stuart Semple is a multidisciplinary British artist working across painting\, sculpture\, happenings\, technology and activism. He is well known for his sociologically engaged works that often discuss youth politics\, accessibility and democracy. \nABOUT STUART SEMPLE\nIn 2018 Semple’s campaign against anti-homeless bars on benches inspired Bournemouth Council to remove them. He has now recreated the bench as a work of art. \nSemple has rallied against hostile design in his art for some time. In this artwork he uses cuddly toys to create a new bench that will banish the memories of Bournemouth Borough Council’s ‘design crimes’.  \nAfter the rapper and pal Max Murdo went down to Bournemouth to remove them – and a 27\,000-strong petition also shouted about how they blocked rough sleepers from lying on them – the council finally caved in and removed the bars.  \nIn the wake of the campaign\, Semple set up hostiledesign.org to allow others to call out other design crimes in public\, even selling stickers to highlight offending items. \nSemple was keen to use his victory of the removal of the bars to transform the public perception of how designs are used inclusively. He invited locals to his Love Bench event\, encouraging the local community to turn the seats into art.  \n“I create art all over the world to make public spaces a bit happier and more inclusive… it is interesting how human this debate has become – it started off as an architectural debate and has ended with people talking on the streets about how we treat others.”

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN : AUB I CANT DRAW PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:Humans learn to draw before they learn to speak and write. It’s a creative instinct as old as humanity. So why then\, do so many of us end up later in life feeling like we can’t draw? That we don’t have the skills? \nI Can’t Draw is an Arts University Bournemouth project which “invites us to re-connect with our inbuilt ability to express ourselves and communicate through the making of marks. Not just with a pencil\, but with anything and everything – cameras\, light\, movement\, string\, found objects\, anything…” \nWhat is I Can’t Draw? \nThis project isn’t a competition – it’s a celebration of what it is to be human and our talent to express ourselves beyond words. AUB is inviting schools to get involved\, for further information click here where you can find details on the I Can’t Draw pack.

SUMMARY:LEIGH WILLIAMS : GLORY II
DESCRIPTION:Sovereign Centre : Concourse  \nLEIGH WILLIAMS : GLORY II \nIn Glory II\, Williams explores the presentation of the fat body\, and how we react to the sight of unashamed fatness. She does so with a large-scale sculpture of a belly\, inspired by confident fat women and by her own journey of self-acceptance. The piece invites the audience to bond with their own body\, whilst celebrating the fat form.

SUMMARY:IAAC CONNECTED EXHIBITION : SAULĖ DOMINAITĖ
DESCRIPTION:SOVEREIGN CENTRE \nIT’S ALL ABOUT CULTURE\, CONNECTED EXHIBITION \nSaulė Dominaitė: ‘Liberty – the freedom to live as you wish or go where you want.’\nLiberty is a word whose meaning can hold entire countries at hostage; one word whose heaviness provoked half a dozen generations to leave.  \nStarting my 20s in a pandemic\, my generation felt robbed – robbed of our youth\, our money and our freedom. But freedom was something my generation never knew\, we’d never lost it\, and we had no desperate need to get it back.  \nIn a post-Soviet Lithuania\, my parents knew what freedom felt like because that freedom stemmed from the previous existence of suppression. Foreign music – banned. Restaurants – unaffordable. Rave culture even in the now idolised wild 90s – non-existent.  \nSo for that same word of “suppression” to be casually thrown around during times when we are free to think\, feel\, want\, buy\, listen\, dance and learn\, just with the added caution of a deadly virus surrounding us – felt misleading. This exhibition is meant to explore these widely different concepts of freedom and suppression between mine and my parents’ early 20s\, and how their experience is teaching me to never take my liberty for granted. \n  \n

SUMMARY:BEAF TAKEOVER ROYAL ARCADE : EMILY HAWES
DESCRIPTION:ROYAL ARCADE : UNIT 9 \nEMILY HAWES : A FIN RISING ON A WIDE BLANK SEA \nAn installation of moving image\, sound and sculpture\, that weaves together themes of local history\, bioacoustics\, marine ecologies and storytelling.  \nArtist’s Website \nIn her 1988 short essay The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction\, Ursula K le Guin refutes the dominant narrative that the first human cultural device or technology was the spear or axe\, used for ‘sticking\, bashing and killing’. Rather\, she argues\, civilisation began with the humble receptacle or container – leaves\, gourds\, shells\, net bags\, slings or sacks\, were used to gather\, transport and hold nuts\, berries\, seeds\, roots\, shoots and leaves\, and other life sustaining nutrients. Le Guin explains: ‘If you haven’t got something to put it in\, food will escape you’\, and as the tool which ‘brings energy home’\, the carrier bag is the untold origin story of culture\, technology and civilisation.  \nUnlike the spear (which follows a linear trajectory towards its target)\, Le Guin’s carrier bag is vast and messy; a ‘womb of things’ and ‘a bag of stars’. Le Guin draws our attention to the fact that the form of the novel\, mirrors the function of the sling or sack\, she explains; ‘A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel is a medicine bundle\, holding things in a particular\, powerful relation to one another and to us.’ For le Guin\, stories\, and in particular science fiction stories\, have a generative potential to redefine\, reimagine and reconfigure how we understand the world around us. \n– Le Guin\, U. The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction (1988\, 2019)\, Ignota Books  \nThe Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction acts as the departure point for ‘A rising fin on a wide blank sea’ which seeks to re-imagine the story of a 70ft long\, 40 tonne blue whale\, which was fatally wounded and washed ashore with the ebb and flow of the tide in Boscombe in 1897.  \nThe film begins by documenting the process of reconstructing a fragment of the jawbone\, using 3d rendering technologies. Once printed\, the replica becomes the protagonist of the film\, akin to a digitalised\, yet fossilised\, carrier bag-of-sorts. Existing somewhere between digital spectre and archaeological tool\, the blue whale jawbone is the storyteller for our post-human time(s). Roaming the watery depths\, this sentient spectre weaves together a narrative around the whale in mythology\, underwater inter-species relations and investigates broader stories in relation to human created stresses and sonic violence within ocean ecologies.
