SUMMARY:BEAF TAKE OVER ROYAL ARCADE : LUCY TURNER
DESCRIPTION:ROYAL ARCADE : CONCOURSE \nLUCY TURNER : MACULA \nThe work celebrates the macula\, which is the part of the eye responsible for the central\, high resolution\, colour vision that takes place in good light. This key piece of anatomy that we all share is the reason that the world can look so bright and colourful\, and this work asks the participants and the audience to consider light as a joyful experience. This artwork will feature as a delicate and attractive paper canopy consisting of a collection of paper sails.

SUMMARY:BEAF TAKEOVER ROYAL ARCADE : EMILY HAWES
DESCRIPTION:ROYAL ARCADE : UNIT 9 \nEMILY HAWES : A FIN RISING ON A WIDE BLANK SEA \nAn installation of moving image\, sound and sculpture\, that weaves together themes of local history\, bioacoustics\, marine ecologies and storytelling.  \nArtist’s Website \nIn her 1988 short essay The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction\, Ursula K le Guin refutes the dominant narrative that the first human cultural device or technology was the spear or axe\, used for ‘sticking\, bashing and killing’. Rather\, she argues\, civilisation began with the humble receptacle or container – leaves\, gourds\, shells\, net bags\, slings or sacks\, were used to gather\, transport and hold nuts\, berries\, seeds\, roots\, shoots and leaves\, and other life sustaining nutrients. Le Guin explains: ‘If you haven’t got something to put it in\, food will escape you’\, and as the tool which ‘brings energy home’\, the carrier bag is the untold origin story of culture\, technology and civilisation.  \nUnlike the spear (which follows a linear trajectory towards its target)\, Le Guin’s carrier bag is vast and messy; a ‘womb of things’ and ‘a bag of stars’. Le Guin draws our attention to the fact that the form of the novel\, mirrors the function of the sling or sack\, she explains; ‘A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel is a medicine bundle\, holding things in a particular\, powerful relation to one another and to us.’ For le Guin\, stories\, and in particular science fiction stories\, have a generative potential to redefine\, reimagine and reconfigure how we understand the world around us. \n– Le Guin\, U. The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction (1988\, 2019)\, Ignota Books  \nThe Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction acts as the departure point for ‘A rising fin on a wide blank sea’ which seeks to re-imagine the story of a 70ft long\, 40 tonne blue whale\, which was fatally wounded and washed ashore with the ebb and flow of the tide in Boscombe in 1897.  \nThe film begins by documenting the process of reconstructing a fragment of the jawbone\, using 3d rendering technologies. Once printed\, the replica becomes the protagonist of the film\, akin to a digitalised\, yet fossilised\, carrier bag-of-sorts. Existing somewhere between digital spectre and archaeological tool\, the blue whale jawbone is the storyteller for our post-human time(s). Roaming the watery depths\, this sentient spectre weaves together a narrative around the whale in mythology\, underwater inter-species relations and investigates broader stories in relation to human created stresses and sonic violence within ocean ecologies.

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:“Sharing personal stories linked to the complexity of existence\, to uncertainty and to broader reflections on the human condition.” \nFor the BEAF 2020 Artists’ Commissions we set a theme\, introduced through the words of visionary international artist William Kentridge.  His expansive career has seen him stage multi-disciplinary performances\, design opera sets and create hard-hitting and poignant drawings and animations. His work explores the legacy of apartheid\, as well as the human condition and the ever-repeating cycle of history and memory. \nCentral to our 2B Human exhibition is his cinematic animation\, Other Faces. Kentridge grew up amidst the racial turmoil in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, and it is this racial tension which informs all his art. \n2B Human exhibition includes work from over 20 artists commissioned by BEAF. Commissions continue in The Royal Arcade. \n  \nCOVID-19 AND GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES \nWe will be following Government guidelines for all events to make sure we provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.  \nKeep up to date on our website as events may have to change or be cancelled should any new restrictions come into play on the day.  \nWe will email ticket holders of any changes to events. \nKeeping you safe \nOur policy is to: \n\nGive you a warm welcome at a safe distance \nUse signage to help you maintain social distance \nProvide hand sanitiser for you to use \nReduce capacity if required \nAsk you to limit social interactions before\, during and after the event \nEncourage audience members aged 11+ to wear a face covering

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION: Mark England
DESCRIPTION:A photographic portrait of the people that live in\, work and visit Boscombe. The series introduces the subjects from a space somewhere between social documentary and portraiture.  “I have lived here for the last decade and adore the unique alloy of the eccentric\, the vibrant and the mundane that melds together to form the character of the area’s people. I try to avoid the “extraordinary within the ordinary” type of cliché when describing what I find fascinating about the people who can be met here but\, in truth\, that is exactly what it is.” \n \n

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION: PATTI GAAL-HOLMES
DESCRIPTION:‘into the frameless distance to the city of (no) memory’ \nAnalogue photography/film is used to question what it means to go into exile\, fleeing into that ‘frameless distance’ that’s so full of promise\, hope and possibility. The project centres on Miklos Gaál’s escape from Hungary\, where he swam across the Danube\, and took a train to Bratislava\, finally escaping across the Bratislava/Austria border. \nThe project also looks at Gaal-Holmes’ father’s earlier escape from Hungary in 1948. In 2018 she travelled\, armed with cameras\, to Budapest/ Bratislava searching for traces of the past to capture on film. \nThe project is informed by W. G. Sebald’s search for the ‘nervature’ of the past\, Kentridge’s premise relating to the complexity and ever-changing uncertainties of human existence\, and Nigerian curator\, Okwui Enwezor’s conviction that\, ‘it is our job to think historically about the present\, since the present is always embedded in the past.’  \n \n  \nhttps://gotbeaf.co.uk/event/artist-talk-patti-gaal-holmes/

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION: Mark Perry
DESCRIPTION:MARK PERRY : SNAPSHOTS OF NORMAL \nIn choosing the normal\, incidental\, and ordinary world of my high street\, I also hope to celebrate the people\, the place\, and some of its character. Using my smartphone camera allows me to capture people unburdened by the knowledge of a lens being cast on them\, and avoid too many deliberations on composition and mise-en-scene. As such\, painting ‘you as I see you’ provides the ideal reflection of what and who we are.  Considering our current social restrictions\, particularly when these pictures were taken\, I hope to have captured life – as it is\, normal or not. \nMark Perry is currently studying for an MA in Fine Art at Arts University Bournemouth. \nClick Here For Artist Instagram

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION: Seeking Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Refuge is a photographic project led by Bournemouth based fine art photographer and community activist Caroline Beale Johnson. It shows images and words from the lives of refugees and migrants currently seeking asylum and living in Bournemouth.  \nFor this project Caroline selected and worked with six emerging and established photographers to provide an insight into the lives of the displaced migrant community. The work reveals the lives of the refugees and migrants\, not from afar\, but from the inside. \nThis exhibition will introduce you to seven people who left places as diverse as Syria\, Venezuela and Sudan and with lives as varied as a secondary school headteacher\, a photographer with his own studio\, and a student at school.  \nDuring the time they spent together\, the photographers learned about what people were escaping from\, and what rich and full lives they left behind. \nPhotographers and Instagram Links: \nCharlie Hall – @charleshall_photography \nMatt Trapp – @matt.trapp.photo  \nLauren Forster – @laurenforster_photo \nGeorge Maund – @george_maund \nKitty Gale – @kittygale \nCarol John – @carolapennell \nRelated Events \nJaz O’Hara Talk  \nArtist Talks: photographers talk about the project  \nAi Weiwei Human Flow Screening \n

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION : WILLIAM KENTRIDGE\, OTHER FACES
DESCRIPTION:William Kentridge is one of the world’s greatest living artists\, and has had an expansive career which has seen him design opera sets\, stage multi-disciplinary performances and create hard-hitting and poignant drawings and animations.  His work explores the legacy of apartheid\, as well as the human condition\, and the ever-repeating cycles of history and memory. \nOther Faces (2011) \nOther Faces is one of Kentridge’s cinematic animations and sees the return of character Soho Eckstein\, a character from previous films who is a Caucasian industrialist and land developer living in post-apartheid South Africa. This film is the newest addition to the artist’s Drawings for Projection series which began in 1989 with Johannesburg\, 2nd Greatest City after Paris.  \nSimilar to other works in Kentridge’s oeuvre\, Other Faces is extremely context dependent. Kentridge grew up amidst the racial turmoil in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, and it is this racial tension which informs his art as the film attempts to narrate the socio-political traumas experienced by individuals in the wake of apartheid and civil war. \nEckstein’s story in Other Faces begins when he is involved in a car accident with a black preacher in front of a black African church in downtown Johannesburg. The ensuing argument attracts a large angry crowd of churchgoers and the film fades into Eckstein’s recollections of the event and his interaction with the preacher.  Soon it becomes apparent that the argument between the two men is more a reflection of their fractured understanding of their country’s past rather than the actual incident. \nKentridge oscillates the narrative between the event and Eckstein’s thoughts using his unique style of animation. The artist only ever draws in charcoal with touches of blue and red pastel. His drawings are then progressively altered through erasure and overdrawing and given a few seconds on a 35 mm film camera. \n“Drawing is about fluidity and testing ideas\,” explains Kentridge. It is thought in slow motion and a process in which notions are constantly modified and consolidated. These realisations of the artist’s contemplations are almost impressionistic; frenzied and hurried\, they project his fleeting thoughts onto the viewer. The music\, provided by fellow South African Philip Miller\, evokes another layer of pathos\, as Eckstein’s story unfolds.

SUMMARY:2B HUMAN EXHIBITION: DENISE WEBBER
DESCRIPTION:DENISE WEBBER : RECENT DRAWINGS \n“I hear the vixen in the early hours\, crying for a mate. It’s a primeval sound. She has no need of sanction or permission. But when I am drawing the sparrow\, I think of the sound of its wingbeats: somewhere between a murmur and a shiver. A bird\, being a creature of the air\, is like a cipher for the voice or the soul\, something fugitive. It can also evoke a message or a missile. Sometimes in my dreams I am bound to a wild animal and feel accountable for it\, as if it were a part of myself.” Denise Webber \nThe female body dominates in Denise Webber’s work. In her drawings she often represents it as nude or with ethereal fragments of fabric or other adornment. Thus freed from cultural or temporal attributes\, the woman’s body reveals its complex relationship to beauty\, agency and power. \nWebber works with a mix of film\, photography and drawing. In much of her work\, women overcome constraints and barriers to enter into spaces from which they have previously been barred. They partake in pleasurable acts of subversion\, or embody the pursuit of artistic creation.  \nIn her recent drawings\, the woman is visited by a wild creature\, a vixen\, a sparrow\, or sometimes a flying fox\, a species on the threshold of extinction. Some drawings celebrate the moment of touching an animal. Others suggest guardianship and ideas around shared origins and destinies. \nDenise Webber was brought up in Famagusta in Cyprus\, where the juxtaposition of hedonism with political violence led eventually to the outbreak of war\, shelling and invasion\, and her family was evacuated to the UK. Her work has been exhibited internationally\, including at Tate Modern London\, Moderna Museet Stockholm and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne. It is represented in the Arts Council Collection and in the Tate archive. She lives and works in London and the South West UK. \nClick Here For Artist Website \n

The work reflects contemporary online dating methods and digital seductive communication.  \nAs well as presenting humorous figures taking pictures of their bodies\, it also exposes the dramatic solitude and need for attention of the young adult in the 21st century. The sculptures will be accompanied with anecdotal texts to make you laugh and think\, and have a taste of what it is to be a young adult trying to figure out your sexuality and find love online. \nINSTAGRAM

SUMMARY:BEAF TAKEOVER ROYAL ARCADE : AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO REALITY
DESCRIPTION:ROYAL ARCADE : UNIT 11 \nAN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO REALITY \n‘An appropriate response to reality’ is an exhibition curated by Aaron Peever and Callum Stacey. The exhibition will showcase works by Alice Cunniffe\, Jack Earls\, Aaron Peever\, and Callum Stacey. This exhibition responds to this year’s BEAF theme 2B Human through artworks made in restricted spaces from over the past year. Being a creative in restricted times has pushed each artist to work in limited spaces\, only being stimulated by the small worlds that surround us.  \nOur work is a reaction to the disruption of our reality. This year’s BEAF theme gave us a focus where we want to support mental health and we would like to ask each viewer to make a small donation to our chosen charity\, Dorset Mind and we encourage viewers to bring a food bank donation\, to be collected at the space.  \nArtists \nAaron Peever \nInstagram @peevers_artwork \nWebsite \nCallum Stacey \nInstagram @callum.s.designs \nWebsite \nAlice Cunniffe \nInstagram @alice.cunniffe \nJack Earls \nInstagram @jackearls.art
