This event is launching the partnership of BEAF Arts Co with Purbeck Film Festival.  \nAbout the film:  \nEverything Everywhere All at Once\, 2022 (15) directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.  \nStarring: Michelle Yeoh\, Stephanie Hsu\, Ke Huy Quan \n“To say this is a showcase for Michelle Yeoh’s talent almost feels like an understatement” The Independent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ \nIt is rare that you can call a film truly sui generis but this film is genuinely unlike any you have seen before. It begins fairly normally with middle aged Evelyn Wang struggling with a failing business and a deteriorating marriage while failing to connect with her daughter Joy. However\, her depressing life is torn apart when she is visited by a consciousness from an alternate reality and finds that she alone can save the fate of all realities in the multiverse. This event is part of our autumn film programme series ‘The Show Must Go On.’ \nAbout the film: \nRafiki\, 2018 (12A) directed by Wanuri Kahiu \nStarring: Neville Misati\, Nice Githinji\, Samantha Mugatsia\, Vitalis Waweru\, Charlie Karumi\, Muthoni Gathecha \n“If ever there were a cinematic equivalent of “purple prose\,” the Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu finds it.” Los Angeles Times \nWith beautiful scenes connected through shades of fuchsia and violet\, reflecting the femininity of the characters\, this gentle film follows the development of love between two young women. Set against the backdrop of the bustling streets of Nairobi\, the two very different girls must choose between love and safety surrounded by insular gossip\, local politics and burgeoning maturity. Their magnetic pull draws us into a queer Romeo and Juliet romance\, as they try to hide their relationship from their politically opposing fathers. \nDirected by Wanuri Kahiu\, part of a strong cohort of Kenyan female filmmakers\, Rafiki was the first Kenyan film to be included in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes earlier this year\, and was then controversially banned from being shown in Kenya by the Kenya Film Classification Board. This event is part of our autumn film programme series ‘The Show Must Go On.’ \nAbout the film: \nSi Pudiera Desear Algo (If I Could Wish for Something)\, 2021\, (rating TBA) directed by Dora García. \nAbout this film\, filmmaker/artist Dora García writes: \nThe inspiration and point of departure of this film is an old song\, written in 1930 by German composer Friedrich Holländer: “Wenn ich mir was wünschen dürfte”. This song\, translated into Spanish as “Si pudiera desear algo” (If I Could Wish for Something)\, has been in my memory for as long as I can remember. \nIt expresses poetically a very complex concept: that the disappointment of women has been going on for so long\, the promise made to them by the revolution has remained for so long unfulfilled\, delayed\, negated\, that the sadness\, the vulnerability derived from this feeling of abandonment has been turned into a shelter and a shield\, perhaps even a sword. Our social art projects are Internet-based\, focusing on gender inequality issues in East Asia. Tomorrow Girls Troop was established in April 2015. \nFor this Talk and Q&A the feminist collective TGT will share how they work as a collective and address gender inequality issues in East Asia by working with pop culture\, magazines\, internet memes\, and commercial advertising. The Tomorrow Girls Troop is made up of about 50 anonymous members worldwide and is consistently growing. \nAbout the workshop: \nGrrrl Zine Fair platforms women\, transgender and non-binary artists and makers and is comprised of a self-publishing fair\, panel talks\, performances\, live music\, exhibitions and workshops curated by artist Lu Williams. \nIn this workshop Grrrl Zine will discuss and explore the history of zine making\, particularly within feminism\, and contemporary zine culture. They will guide you through making your own zine and exploring different techniques as well as using imagery from our film programme. My take away was that punk can still be a force for change rather than a throwback soundtrack.” Louder than war \nReleased in 2022\, against the backdrop of a return to military dictatorship in Myanmar (also known as Burma) following a deadly coup and historic protests to resist it in the spring of 2021. No Spicy No Fun: Rebel Riot in the UK shows a Yangon group of activist punks formed under the military dictatorship\, full of hope\, experiencing new things in new lands and sharing ideas on social change that they wanted to take back home\, ready to face the future together. \nSince then\, things have become unimaginably hard for the band and the people of Myanmar as they continue their resistance. When General Min Aung Hlaing took power in February 2021 there were spontaneous protests all over Myanmar opposing the military coup. People from all walks of life took part in these passionate and often creative protests and following that the military began a brutal crackdown since killing thousands of people. SUMMARY:Pinhole workshop with Brendan Barry
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will make and then photograph with their own pinhole camera. \nA pinhole camera is based on the naturally occurring phenomenon of the camera obscura and is one of the most accessible and fun ways of leaning about the fundamentals of analogue photography. Images will be captured on to light sensitive silver gelatine photographic paper and then developed into a paper negative in a darkroom constructed in the space. \nOne of the focuses of the workshop will be on enabling and teaching participants all they need to know and what resources and equipment they will need to repeat what they have learnt during the day so they can continue using their cameras afterwards at home. \nBrendan Barry is an expert on camera making and alternative photographic processes and there will be plenty of time during the workshop to discuss more complex and advanced camera building and image making techniques and approaches for those who are interested. \nOn Thursday 16th Feb\, 7pm at B.A.D. Employing footage previously shot by Goldin and her colleagues\, which records the grassroots campaign as it ups the ante on pressurising major cultural institutions to distance themselves from the Sacklers\, Poitras’ film widens its focus to encompass Goldin’s extraordinary life. It charts her journey from a conservative childhood to her entry into the art world\, becoming a defining figure of the 1970s and 1980s New York art scene\, and along the way creating a landmark work with The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. \nPoitras brings together the various strands of Goldin’s life with impressive clarity. DESCRIPTION:Ian Wornast\n \nWe are commissioning Ian Wornast\, an artist from ActionSpace to create new semi-abstract flags in response to Boscombe and its architecture. Ian has been mapping Boscombe’s history and the built environment around us through colourful mark making documenting iconic buildings in Boscombe. Watch out for Ian’s vibrant flags that will fill the streets in April. \nArtist bio:\nIan Wornast’s art practice is inspired by place and a developed sense of design. Ian has a passion for transport and the built environment around us. He is particularly inspired by London transport\, its history and developments. He notices and researches changes to structures around the city and creates graphic yet personal geographic mappings in response. Iconic buildings and local landmarks get translated into Ian’s distinctive style\, which uses bright colour and intricate references. He has produced work in response to areas around London and further afield including Glasgow. In 2022 he was commissioned by Art on the Underground for a poster work for Nine Elms station to respond to its dramatically evolving landscape. Ian’s work has a strong and unique visual identity – recognisable instantly by his use of line and pattern. He is prolific in his experimentation. Like urban developments\, in his art he likes “things to be moving forward\, not going back\, to keep progressing”. His artworks encourage you to look closer and also out at the world around you. \nIan Wornast. DESCRIPTION:Brendan Barry\n \nBrendan Barry is a photographer\, educator and camera builder whose creative photographic practice combines elements of construction\, education\, performance and participation. \nBrendan is working with us at BEAF to create a large camera obscura in Boscombe Arts Depot. Over the course of the festival we invite you to capture images of Boscombe and the people within our wonderful community with Brendan. Portraits of Boscombe will become activated with daily activities where we can learn about each other through experimenting and processing. DESCRIPTION:Harold Offeh\n \nB.A.D. will feature our major festival exhibition\, Boscombe World\, commissioned from artist Harold Offeh\, an adventurous visual and sensory art installation\, inviting play\, participation and contemplation. \nBoscombe World explores the area’s rich history as a seaside resort for visitors in search of health\, recuperation and pleasure\, brought into dialogue with Boscombe’s contemporary perception as a place for recovery\, sanctuary and asylum. \nThe installation invites visitors to engage with Boscombe as a place of healing and restorative care. Boscombe World will be a hub for a number of playful installations. The project hopes to provide an opportunity to reflect on the rich and complex narratives of Boscombe and challenge the reducing of places and communities to labels\, like good\, bad\, ugly etc. It will seek to confront cliches and stereotypes and provide a platform for narratives and voices that have not been heard or marginalised. . \nHarold Offeh is an artist working in a range of media including performance\, video\, photography\, learning and social arts practice. Offeh is interested in the space created by the inhabiting or embodying of histories. He employs humour as a means to confront the viewer with historical narratives and contemporary culture. He has exhibited and performed widely in the UK and internationally including Tate Britain and Tate Modern\, South London Gallery\, Kettle’s Yard\, Cambridge\, Wysing Art Centre\, Studio Museum Harlem\, New York\, MAC VAL\, France\, Kunsthal Charlottenborg\, Denmark and Art Tower Mito\, Japan. \nOffeh studied Critical Fine Art Practice at the University of Brighton and has an MA in Fine art Photography from the Royal College of Art\, London and a PhD in Contemporary Art and Performance from Leeds Beckett University. He lives in Cambridge and works in London and Oxford. He is currently a Senior Tutor in Art at the Ruskin School of Art\, University of Oxford and a tutor in MA Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art\, London. \nHarold Offeh\, workshop presented for East Side Projects\, Birmingham\, 2020. DESCRIPTION:The festival kicks off with our Launch Party on Friday 16 June\, bringing incredible music all the way from Soweto to Boscombe’s 02.\n\n\nFeaturing BCUC\nThe festival kicks off with our Launch Party on Friday 16 June\, bringing incredible music all the way from Soweto to Boscombe’s glorious Victorian music venue\, the O2.  Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (known as BCUC) combines a heady mix of indigenous funk\, hip hop and punk rock energy\, portraying the rich traditions\, rituals and beliefs coming out of Africa. \n“Without a doubt the best live act I saw.” Gilles Peterson \nSoweto based BCUC tackle the harsh realities of the voiceless\, – the plight of the workers at the bottom of the social food chain. The Africa they portray is not poor\, but rich in tradition\, rituals and beliefs. \n“The most impressive newcomers this year.” The Guardian \nA stone’s throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organised the escape of the most wanted anti-Apartheid activists of Soweto\, BCUC rehearses in a shipping container-turned-community restaurant\, where their indomitable outspokenness echoes in a whole new way. Like its elders\, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees its music as a hedonistic trance\, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. \nArtistic heirs to Philip “Malombo” Tabane and Batsumi\, they give contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. Harare features a groundbreaking line-up\, mixing the buzzing acoustics of the Southern African rich-toned marimba\, mbira\, ringing jingling guitars\, swooping basslines\, irresistible dance rhythms and uplifting vocals. Harare celebrates both the past and the future of African dance music and brings a spectacular mix of Southern African musical styles\, particularly the musical styles of Zimbabwe. DESCRIPTION:Keira Rathbone\, Typewriter Artist\n \nJoin Keira in the BEAF Art Pavilion where she will create live typewriter artworks that she describes as ‘typics’ to document the eyes of people in Boscombe. “During these short encounters\, we will have a unique moment to look into each other’s eyes\, to connect and listen.” \nOver the course of the festival a collection of eyes will also fill the streets throughout Boscombe\, creating a trail for the public to find and explore. \nKeira will also be typing eyes from her typewriter on Boscombe precinct on the 21-22 April 2023\, alongside Brendan Barry’s camera caravan\, so please sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear about it and the activities in June. \nImage ©️ Alex Griffiths \nArtist bio: Reading born\, Poole raised\, Bristol “educated” and for the last 10 years London-based artist Keira Rathbone has been messing around on old manual typewriters for the past 18 years. She types landscapes\, portraits\, nature and objects using typewriter characters to represent or translate the shape\, texture and tone in what she sees into original ‘typics’ . This is done directly from life\, wherever possible.\nWhen street-typing\, Keira’s niche artform appeals to and attracts comment and conversation from people of all ages and walks of life. SUMMARY:The Stories We Thread
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Refuge Collaboration \nThe Stories We Thread brings together all the voices of the Seeking Refuge project; the young unaccompanied refugees\, asylum seekers\, and all the women and men refugees who come to our weekly workshops to create a large communal artwork. Using one of the oldest photographic printing techniques\, the cyanotype\, a camera-less process\, will act as a collage of images using plants from the UK\, maps of people’s hometowns\, countries and precious objects. ‘Thursday Threads’ weekly participants (an ongoing Seeking Refuge and BEAF project) have been working collaboratively to sew these stories together\, embellishing them with gold embroidery\, and presenting to us the stories and journeys of all those who have fled their homes and communities. \nAlongside the exhibition will be a set of ‘painting with light’ postcards that you can purchase\, produced by participants from Bournemouth and Poole College in photography workshops at TOSH. The words are inspired by their first thoughts of the UK when they arrived. \nThursday Threads workshop. My practice is unified by my investment in local place and community spaces – how people of mixed abilities\, backgrounds and needs are drawn together drives my desire to share meaningful personal and cultural narratives. Innovative art forms and sensitive\, collaborative co-creation that actively elevates lesser heard voices and new talent forms the core of my work. With notions of the creative role as encompassing both tactile product and social process\, I aspire to lead diverse audiences to engage with perhaps previously unfamiliar or inaccessible artworks. In raising awareness through conversations and participation connecting regional to national – whether animated\, drawn\, performed or curated – I hope to draw attention to what many would consider difficult\, underrepresented or sensitive subjects. \nMaddison Collymore: I am a Bournemouth based multidisciplinary artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Arts University Bournemouth\, 2019. My practice is exploring dreamscapes or imaginative landscapes that are inspired by my Great Grandmother’s migration from India to the UK. I predominantly use drawing\, collage and stitch to trace this narrative of changing cultures\, new discovery and resettlement.The work I make is largely speculative with references to intersectional feminism\, race and stories of science fiction that aid alternative ways of seeing or being in the world. Part of the creative process is playing with shadow landscapes\, spilled pigment or multicoloured drawing techniques that allow the materials to begin the work. I tend to add collage and stitch to then highlight and attach my lineal references. Sometimes participation becomes a part of the work with moments for other voices to collaborate and engage with the process of making. Experimenting with control is definitely a part of my process and a looseness with materials or inviting interaction can take the work in unexpected ways. \nSadaf Firoozi: Having worked as an Art Director in advertising for almost a decade\, the title of ‘artist’ does not fully encompass the practice through which Sadaf Firoozi now integrates installation\, writing\, performance\, collage\, painting\, drawing\, film\, sculpture\, and graphic design methodologies. However\, it is the active\, creative\, traumatized\, and expressive body that binds this diversity as a coherent and intelligent critique of contemporary life. The topics addressed derive from personal experience and the social issues that affect both the isolated individual and collective community. Although initiated by a negative viewpoint\, the art-making process that follows produces a visualization to be analyzed and shared in positive ways. The stories being told are familiar but open-ended\, raising questions in the minds of others. In this way\, the audience looks to their own remembered relations and events for meaning. Although “Who are you?” can be met with a simple response\, the physical\, social\, and cultural contexts in which the work is encountered are purposefully manipulated. Just as this artist interrogates her own cultural and geographical shift from Iran to the UK\, the richly provocative outputs present shifting situations and narratives. \nRose Leyshon: Rose Leyshon is a figurative sculptor living in Boscombe. She trained in traditional casting methods in Paris and uses a variety of materials including plaster\, ceramics\, resins and\, most recently\, bronze. Through her work\, she aims to represent the complexities and subtleties of womanhood and sexuality. She uses figuration to portray recognisable people and inspire empathy from the viewer. She’s influenced by artists such as Duane Hanson and Paula Rego for their use of realism and their humanist\, political and feminist engagement.\nFor BEAF 2023\, Rose has been commissioned to produce some new sculptures on the theme of “Unheard Voices”. She will portray a variety of identifiable\, uncensored and compassionate portraits of the neglected\, the tired and the dismissed. The work is intended for the most modest people of Boscombe: it will be amusing\, touching and relatable. \nMark Perry: My creative practice is committed to exploring the signifiers of individuality/personality and the way identity is constructed\, deconstructed or transformed through life experiences. Contemporary notions of the lens and its technological distortion are key to the gaze I manipulate. Images captured via communications technologies provide a starting point for sketches that are then reworked and edited in pursuit of an appropriate visual language. In this transition from mobile phone or laptop\, to canvas or paper\, observational representation’s evolve surpassing mimesis to become visualised interrogations of individualism. Within this I have a list of commissions that vary from Fan work to portraits\, all of which are guided by the above notion of individuality and identity. To offer something that is observed beyond the representational\, and as such deliver a personal reflection on the moment. \nNicholas Teo: Nicholas Teo is a Singaporean filmmaker & photographer now based in Bournemouth.\nCurrently pursuing Commercial Photography at Arts University Bournemouth\, Nicholas’s practice revolves around fashion\, fine art\, and documentary work. Enjoying all kinds of image-making and describing himself as a “jack of all trades” creative\, his work varies wildly in style and subject matter. But born with a curious mind and gentle heart\, the common thread of exploring and advocating for social causes like mental health became more apparent in his work and he seeks to pursue this even more in the future. \n

Art helps Salma evoke conceptuality and form a precise incarnation of complex states humans experience. Since art has significantly influenced her life\, her mission has been to help people unfold their potential and create better life journeys. Salma considers her art as visual affirmations\, which can be a self-discovering journey and a self-empowering tool to support people in their lives.\nSALMAADIART \nMiles Bagarinao\nsaltseashark (he/they) is an all-rounder\, jack-of-all trades artist that makes silly TTRPGs\, short video games\, animations and illustrations for whatever medium suits at the time\, recently making art about the transmasc experience. He creates heartfelt short stories of characters in extreme situations through illustration\, animation and interactive media.\n@saltseashark saltseashark.portfolio.site \nDr. Aanka Batta\nAanka Batta is a south asian born artist and activist residing in the UK. She explores migration\, race relations and gender in her work. Aanka is a performance poet who combines theatre and poetry to deliver emotionally evocative experiences. She has performed at theatre venues nationally\, and at conferences\, festivals and demonstrations. Aanka is also a public speaker on political matters centered on race. She speaks at public sector meetings and also does case work in anti-racism advocacy. \nTracey Jane\nTracey Jane graduated from Exeter College of Art and Design and has painted in all media throughout her life. Now she concentrates purely on acrylics on canvas or wood. Since moving to Dorset from London in 2016\, she has been inspired by the beautiful Dorset coastline and her experiences as an Argentine Tango dancer and teacher. Currently she is trying to express the energy and connection of people whilst they dance and also their relationship to others in the room.\nwww.bfmedia.co.uk \nPrajvi Mandhani\nPrajvi Mandhani works across video\, sound\, printmaking\, and drawing. She creates multi-media installations through a blend of digital as well as material-led processes. In love with arts in all forms\, he was always interested in play and study different media\, from visual arts to music\, dancing and anything that he can use to connect to his emotions. He thinks art is necessary in human lives as it’s a way to understand your own feelings. Now a days the main medium used are digital and stencil art that he uses together to create his paintings. His stencils usually use strong contrasting colours due to the medium limitations\, but it’s also a great way for evoking strong emotions. This is the foundation for his work: realistic portraits in acrylic or oil on canvas\, this is his first exhibition experience but he has done several commissions. \nHuda Osni\nHuda Osni is currently pursuing a Ba (Hons) Film Production degree at Arts University Bournemouth. She is currently doing research on her own heritage and identity. She has always believed that films are a great medium of telling stories.\nAnd spends a lot of her time watching films and analyzing them. She explains “It’s fun to watch people’s theories on the stories as well. Born and raised in Bournemouth by her parents who emigrated from Zimbabwe\, Samantha developed a non-stop work ethic that drives her artistic passion. She draws inspiration from the Renaissance work of Edward Hopper and Vilhelm Hammershoi\, as well as contemporary artist George Shaw. By exploring the unorthodox\, Samantha aims to inspire conversation and evoke feelings that transport you back to a moment in your own life. Her practice is concerned with combining the figurative and the natural through forms of collage that then spark compositions for oil paintings. Her oil paintings currently explore themes of memory\, time passing\, and diaspora. SUMMARY:Postcards from Prison
DESCRIPTION:Postcards from Prison is an exhibition made up of rarely heard voices from inside the criminal justice system. Following an Open call-out the exhibition has been selected by members of The Outsiders Project. The final selection\, displayed inside Boscombe’s Police Box\, is part of the wider work of The Outsiders Project\, where those with lived experience of the criminal justice system have been visiting prisons across the south and southwest to deliver workshops and performances. \nThe Outsiders Project supports people with lived experience of addiction\, recovery and mental health\, TOP have just completed an extensive tour of prisons in the south west\, delivering workshops and performances from members of the Project. \nAll postcard submissions will also be displayed on our website. \nBoscombe Police Box.
