SUMMARY:Selling Art Today
DESCRIPTION:OSC: Selling Art Today – Galleries\, Clients\, and Digital Platforms\nJoin Jackie Sarafopoulos\, Freelance Art Consultant\, Founder of Jackie Sarafopoulos\, and Owner/Director of Modern Contemporary Art – a gallery developed to buy and sell artwork – for an insightful talk at TOSH to explore different ways of selling your artwork. \nThroughout the talk Jackie will share her industry knowledge and experience of the current art market\, and what to expect from it as an artist. The talk will focus on working with different galleries and clients\, as well as sharing useful platforms to showcase and sell your work. This talk is open to visual artists at any stage of their career\, with a particular interest in selling your artwork or a curiosity to do so. There will be time for questions and discussions towards the end of the session. \nAbout Jackie Sarafopoulos\n \nJackie Sarafopoulos is a Freelance Art Consultant and Founder of Jackie Sarafopoulos\, and Owner/Director of Modern Contemporary Art Gallery. With more than 30 years’ experience across the visual arts sector\, she has worked extensively in curation\, exhibitions\, collections management\, and cultural strategy. Her specialist expertise includes working with trusts and foundations\, arts education\, curatorial practice\, interpretation\, and promotion. She brings significant project and operations management experience\, collaborating with charitable\, educational\, voluntary\, community\, commercial\, and cultural organisations. Jackie is passionate about developing innovative\, audience-focused projects in partnership with cultural organisations. Her remit includes securing funding from government bodies\, private donors\, community groups\, and charitable funders to deliver collaborative\, multi-disciplinary and site-specific commissions with local\, national\, and international artists. These projects are designed to engage new audiences and encourage meaningful participation. She represents artists and artists’ estates\, develops strategic approaches for community stakeholders\, and regularly mentors artists while supporting undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Jackie maintains strong links across both the commercial art market and the not-for-profit sector. She currently serves on the Collections and Exhibitions Advisory Committee at Pallant House Gallery. \nAbout Modern Contemporary Art Gallery \nModern Contemporary Art is a UK-based online gallery and art advisory founded in 2021 by Jackie Sarafopoulos. The platform is dedicated to the sourcing\, presentation\, and sale of modern and contemporary artworks\, with a particular emphasis on works on paper. Its carefully curated collection spans a diverse range of media\, including lithographs\, screenprints\, etchings\, linocuts\, monoprints\, and woodcuts\, alongside drawings\, watercolours\, and a select group of original paintings and sculpture. The gallery works closely with artist estates\, established galleries\, collectors\, and charitable trusts\, fostering relationships built on transparency\, ethical practice\, and rigorous scholarship. By bridging historical and contemporary practices\, Modern Contemporary Art showcases works by a wide range of artists — from 19th- and 20th-century masters to significant figures in post-war and modern British art. Beyond sales\, the gallery offers personalised advisory services to private collectors\, institutions\, and corporate clients. These include collection management\, acquisition strategy\, provenance research\, and guidance on authentication\, conservation\, and framing. It also supports new collectors\, providing advice on building cohesive and meaningful collections over time. While primarily operating online\, the gallery maintains an active presence at public exhibitions\, art fairs\, and print-focused events across the UK\, including the Hepworth Wakefield Print Fair. Through this hybrid model\, Modern Contemporary Art aims to make high-quality\, collectible works more accessible to a wider audience\, combining traditional connoisseurship with a modern\, digital-first approach. \nTicketed events at BEAF \nAll profits from our ticket sales go back into supporting our work with artists and community groups. A limited number of community tickets are available at every event for those with low income\, outsider artists\, asylum seekers\, refugees and vulnerable migrants. Please email us at hello@gotbeaf.co.uk if you would like a free ticket.

SUMMARY:The Stories We Thread
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Refuge Collaboration \nThe Stories We Thread brings together all the voices of the Seeking Refuge project; the young unaccompanied refugees\, asylum seekers\, and all the women and men refugees who come to our weekly workshops to create a large communal artwork. Using one of the oldest photographic printing techniques\, the cyanotype\, a camera-less process\, will act as a collage of images using plants from the UK\, maps of people’s hometowns\, countries and precious objects. ‘Thursday Threads’ weekly participants (an ongoing Seeking Refuge and BEAF project) have been working collaboratively to sew these stories together\, embellishing them with gold embroidery\, and presenting to us the stories and journeys of all those who have fled their homes and communities. \nAlongside the exhibition will be a set of ‘painting with light’ postcards that you can purchase\, produced by participants from Bournemouth and Poole College in photography workshops at TOSH. The words are inspired by their first thoughts of the UK when they arrived. \nThursday Threads workshop. Image ©️ Heidi Steller \nSeeking Refuge is a creative\, collaborative project sharing the hidden voices of people who have been forced to flee their homes. Seeking Refuge is an ongoing project that works with people seeking asylum in the UK and people that have settled in Bournemouth through ongoing creative workshops\, such as textiles and photography\, as well as working with locally commissioned artists. \nSeeking Refuge is a BEAF Arts Co project.\nSeeking Refuge is supported by: Alice Ellen Cooper Dean Charitable Foundation\, Community Action Network\, Dorset Community Foundation\, Henry Smith Charity\, JP Morgan\, Lottery Community Fund\, People’s Health Trust\, Recreate Dorset\, Valentine Charitable Trust. \nFacilitated by workshop leaders\, Heidi Steller and Maddison Collymore. \nThe Stories We Thread is a BEAF 2023 Commission \nSat 17-Sun 25 June\, 11am – 6pm\nFree event

SUMMARY:Pinhole workshop with Brendan Barry
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will make and then photograph with their own pinhole camera. \nA pinhole camera is based on the naturally occurring phenomenon of the camera obscura and is one of the most accessible and fun ways of leaning about the fundamentals of analogue photography. Images will be captured on to light sensitive silver gelatine photographic paper and then developed into a paper negative in a darkroom constructed in the space. \nOne of the focuses of the workshop will be on enabling and teaching participants all they need to know and what resources and equipment they will need to repeat what they have learnt during the day so they can continue using their cameras afterwards at home. \nBrendan Barry is an expert on camera making and alternative photographic processes and there will be plenty of time during the workshop to discuss more complex and advanced camera building and image making techniques and approaches for those who are interested. \nOn Thursday 16th Feb\, 7pm at B.A.D. Brendan will also be talking about his practice alongside his work in our BEAF 2023 Festival in June\, so please feel free to come along to that too. \nImage credit above: Brendan Barry \nBOOK HERE
